the story of "Flyer Song"

In 2007 my friend Kip sent an MP3 of a song I wrote to a friend, Scott Berg, who was serving on the USS John C. Stennis. He had been talking about how grateful he was to his wife for being supportive of his difficult career for almost 30 years. She thought the sentiment of the song might touch him personally.

Next thing we knew he had commissioned a video and it was on its way to us via FEDEX from Dubai.

The video has touched me and thousands of others since then but, to be honest with you, I never liked the recording I had. In my haste to share my song with Scott, I had sent the wrong version of the song; a simple work tape version that Casey and I did in the living room at 2am one night...I had better recordings but after seeing the video, it got me thinking.

I thought, "This looks like a movie" and I wished that the recording held up to the images and the magnificent people in the video. So this year, 2009, I called my friend Ron Oates, producer and arranger extraordinaire and asked him to help me make a recording that would stand up to the "film".

With the help of Ron, my friend Larry and Robin at Parlor Productions in Nashville and the vision of Will Fox from Whitehardt, I realized my dream of having an even better video with a fabulous, soundtrack-sounding version of the song and this time I get to be in it!

Enjoy and while you watch, I hope you think about the amazing men and women who protect us and, heck, about the people in your life who love you unconditionally. No matter what.

Also, be sure to check in with the "Flyer Song Blog" from time to time. There are some remarkable stories and photos I've asked new friends; friends I have made because of the song, to share.
